This choir performs concert literature of all kinds: secular, sacred, contemporary, multi-cultural, etc. They perform the classics of great choral music by the master composers and perform in numerous languages. Women’s Choir & Men’s Choir

These choirs are open to all 9th & 10th grade female and male students regardless of musical background or experience. These classes are the starting point for freshmen men or women. The unique aspects of the young voice are explored in these classes – especially the changing male voices and the many “problems” that this phenomena presents and how to deal with it. The students in these classes will have an opportunity to go on to one of the advanced choirs after completing a year (sometimes less) in Women’s Choir or Men’s Choir. After the students 10th grade year, students may only retake men’s choir or women’s choir at the permission of the director. Students in these classes must attend all competitions, festivals, performances and concerts as indicated on the rehearsal/performance calendar. All students MUST attend the after school rehearsals as scheduled on the choir’s master calendar. Students in these classes may earn the right to go on tour if they wish to do so. Classroom behavior, conduct on the MEHS campus, grades, GPAs, and all classroom attendance, etc., will be the determining factor in this. It is also the director’s prerogative to dismiss a student from this class if it is in the best interest of all the students in the class. Should this happen, the student will not participate in singing every day. They will still have to come to class, but sit “on the sidelines” and be given alternate written work. Not attending a performance or mandatory event can cause this to happen. Excessive absences to the point where the student can not keep up is also a scenario under which this may occur.

Women's Chamber Ensemble

Membership in this class is open only at the invitation of the director. This class is designed for women who are taking choir for the second or third time, with possibly a few selected freshman women. The women in this class are selected based on things like previous classroom attendance, a desire to learn additional and more advanced literature, and of course how well curriculum from a previous vocal music class has been mastered. After a year in this class the women are often encouraged to try out for Chamber Singers. This class may be repeated only at the discretion of the director. It is also the director’s prerogative to dismiss a student from this class if it is in the best interest of all the students in the class. Students in this class must attend all competitions, festivals and tour.

Chamber Singers

Chamber Singers is open by audition or invitation of the director only. Usually a student’s participation in this class is preceded by a year or two in men’s choir, women’s choir, or women’s chamber Ensemble. The music in this class tends to be more sophisticated and mature. The class moves quickly and students are expected to keep up. There are a number of after-school and evening performances required, especially during the December Holiday season. The students in this class are also participants in the Chabot College Chamber Chorale. They do not have to attend the Tuesday night rehearsals at the college. They will only be expected to perform at one concert each term. In exchange, they will earn a unit of college credit for each term. They will not have to pay extra money for this. It is free of charge. This is the ensemble designed for students who read music well and have exhibited a high degree of commitment to the program. In a very few cases a freshman may be considered for this class if they show a high degree of musical expertise. In general, chamber singers are juniors and seniors with more developed vocal skills and technique, with a few select sophomores. Students in this class must attend all competitions, festivals and tour. This class may be repeated only at the discretion of the director. It is also the director’s prerogative to dismiss a student from this class if he believes it is in the best interest of all the students in the class or if that student creates a negative rehearsal setting.

Monarch Mirage Show Choir

The Monarch Mirage Show Choir is open by audition and/or invitation only. Rehearsals are after school and involve a great deal of commitment. Students must demonstrate ability to sing in a pop style and sing it well. Students must also demonstrate a strong dance ability – or at least the ability to learn. Students in this ensemble will be graded on and expected to perform in the all-school musical first term and a heavy-duty competition season second term. Students in this class must attend all competitions, festivals and tour. This class may be repeated only at the discretion of the director. It is also the director’s prerogative to dismiss a student from this class if it is in the best interest of all the students in the class.

Deja Bluez Jazz Ensemble

This group is an invitation only group that practices for about 20 minutes a day during lunch. The singers in this group show exceptional reading and vocal skill, and the love for jazz music.

Badminton team

Mt. Eden High Badminton is currently on a winning streak. They been undefeated since 1999. They received their 100th win on April 8, 2008.

Special Guests

Rap Group Public Enemy came to Mt Eden High to talk about the dangers of gangs and drugs in the early 1990's as part of a campaign they were in. Chuck D was not available to be there.
