The Basics are a band from Melbourne, Australia, formed by Wally de Backer and Kris Schroeder in 2002.

History

The Basics were formed after Kris met Wally at a party in Melbourne [ [http://www.smh.com.au/news/gig-reviews/the-basics/2007/04/19/1176696981643.html smh.com.au ] ] . They were both drunk and bonded when they realised both knew the lyrics of the Sir Mix-A-Lot hit Baby Got Back.

Initially they played around Melbourne as an acoustic guitar/drums combo, starting at the House of Fools in Footscray, but when they later welcomed Michael Hubbard on electric guitar, Wally got Kris "a delicious bass" and the trio was born.

Tim Heath joined the group in June 2004, after Michael decided to pursue his solo career, which has included being one half of Down Hills Home. Melbourne thespian and Dog With Wheels bassist Dave Bramble occasionally joins the band on tour, playing keys, often while sporting a large moustache.

In 2007, the song 'Rattle My Chain' was used in a series of commercials for Volvo Australia. The song 'Hey There' will feature in the forthcoming British film The Bank Job - starring Jason Statham - and was used as the backing for a February 2007 short film directed by Tim Longhurst called The Rip. Their song 'Better' will be featured in a forthcoming surfing doco about the invention of the shortboard in 1967. In 2008 season two of Californication starring David Duchovny will feature their cover of The Sonics' classic 'Have Love Will Travel'.

The members play:

* Kris Schroeder: Bass, Vocals
* Wally de Backer: Drums, Vocals
* Tim Heath: Guitar, Vocals

Their musical style could loosely be described as referencing 60s pop and rock (such as The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Kinks, The Police, etc) with elements of rock 'n' roll, reggae and rhythm and blues mixed in. However their new material, currently being written for their tentatively titled Misery is Currency second album are taking their cues from blues and soft rock. The band has yet to quash rumours that Jake Shears will be a guest co-writer on this album.

Their live performances are well known for their sense of humour and energy. Covers frequently make an appearance from various sources: to date, some of the bands covered have been Cream, The Kinks, The Police, New Kids on the Block, The Clash, The Beatles and The Coasters (via The Beatles for their cover of Three Cool Cats).

Upcoming Projects

The band are currently working on demos for a new album tentatively titled Misery is Currency. The album promises to be more bluesy and will feature several live staples not included on Stand Out/Fit In such as 'If I was Wrong', 'Wait For You' and 'My Baby'. The rumoured title of Letters from the Interwebs is false and unfounded.
