History
The Basics were formed after Kris met Wally at a party in
Melbourne [ [http://www.smh.com.au/news/gig-reviews/the-basics/2007/04/19/1176696981643.html smh.com.au ] ] . They were both drunk and bonded when they realised both knew the lyrics of theSir Mix-A-Lot hitBaby Got Back .Initially they played around Melbourne as an acoustic guitar/drums combo, starting at the
House of Fools in Footscray, but when they later welcomedMichael Hubbard on electric guitar, Wally got Kris "a delicious bass" and the trio was born.Tim Heath joined the group in June 2004, after Michael decided to pursue his solo career, which has included being one half ofDown Hills Home . Melbourne thespian andDog With Wheels bassistDave Bramble occasionally joins the band on tour, playing keys, often while sporting a large moustache.In 2007, the song 'Rattle My Chain' was used in a series of commercials for Volvo Australia. The song 'Hey There' will feature in the forthcoming British film
The Bank Job - starringJason Statham - and was used as the backing for a February 2007 short film directed byTim Longhurst called The Rip. Their song 'Better' will be featured in a forthcoming surfing doco about the invention of the shortboard in 1967. In 2008 season two ofCalifornication starringDavid Duchovny will feature their cover ofThe Sonics ' classic 'Have Love Will Travel '.The members play:
* Kris Schroeder: Bass, Vocals
* Wally de Backer: Drums, Vocals
* Tim Heath: Guitar, VocalsTheir musical style could loosely be described as referencing 60s pop and rock (such as
The Beatles ,The Beach Boys ,The Kinks ,The Police , etc) with elements ofrock 'n' roll ,reggae andrhythm and blues mixed in. However their new material, currently being written for their tentatively titledMisery is Currency second album are taking their cues from blues and soft rock. The band has yet to quash rumours thatJake Shears will be a guest co-writer on this album.Their live performances are well known for their sense of humour and energy. Covers frequently make an appearance from various sources: to date, some of the bands covered have been Cream,
The Kinks ,The Police ,New Kids on the Block ,The Clash ,The Beatles andThe Coasters (viaThe Beatles for their cover ofThree Cool Cats ).Discography
