Joliot is from a family of noted scientists. His grandparents, Marie and
Pierre Curie , his namesake, won aNobel Prize inphysics in 1903 withHenri Becquerel for their study of radioactivity. Marie Curie is also the only person to win two Nobel Prizes in different sciences; her second award being inchemistry for her discovery ofradium . Joliot's parents,Irène Joliot-Curie andFrédéric Joliot-Curie , won a Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1935 for their discovery of artificial radioactivity.
