Garderegiment Fuseliers Prinses Irene

The Garderegiment Fuseliers Prinses Irene is a regiment of the Royal Netherlands Army, named after Princess Irene, the sister of Queen Beatrix. It is one of two regiments, along with the Garderegiment Grenadiers en Jagers, to be classed as 'Guards'. The regiment was formed in 1946 as the Regiment Prinses Irene, to perpetuate the traditions of the Princess Irene Brigade, a formation of Free Dutch troops formed after the German invasion of the Netherlands in 1940. The regiment was awarded the status of guards in 1952. Today, the regiment serves in the armoured infantry role as part of 13 Gemechaniseerde (Mechanized) Brigade.
