Galway, having no competition in the Connacht Championship, played the winners of a preliminary game between Kerry and Antrim. The winners of this quarter-final went on to play the Munster champions in a single All-Ireland semi-final.
All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Paths to the final
The Munster Championship proved to be a complete walkover for Cork once again. In the Munster final they defeated Waterford for the second consecutive year on a huge score line of 3-2 to 0-12. It was their second provincial title in-a-row. In the Leinster Championship Kilkenny overcame Offaly to win their second provincial title in-a-row also.
The final
Sunday,
September 14 was the date of the All-Ireland final between Kilkenny and Cork. It was a repeat of the previous year’s final and the big question was whether Cork could gain revenge for that humiliating defeat. On the Cork teamRay Cummins andMartin O'Doherty were notable absentees, while, rather ominously, the Kilkenny team contained fourteen of the previous year’s starting fifteen. The atmosphere was tense atCroke Park amongst the Cork supporters. This tension was certainly not eased when after just twelve minutes of play Kilkenny led by 0-5 to 0-1. Kilkenny retained their lead and at half-time they lead by six points.Richie Power scored Kilkenny’s second goal after just 18 seconds of the second half. While this appeared to be the nail in the coffin for Cork the game turned in their favour after this. Kilkenny failed to score for the final twenty minutes of the game as Cork clawed their way back. NewcomerTomás Mulcahy and substituteSeánie O'Leary scored two goals to cut Cork’s deficit to two points. In the dying seconds of the game, however, a goal chance by John Buckley just went over the crossbar. The final score read Kilkenny 2-14, Cork 2-12. For the second consecutive year Kilkenny had overcome their greatest rivals in the final. Results
