Overview
Sunday
6 September was the date of the 1992 All-Ireland senior hurling final between Kilkenny and Cork. It was the eighteenth championship meeting between these two great hurling rivals. Both sides last met in the1983 championship decider when Kilkenny were the winners. Cork last defeated ‘the Cats’ in the championship in the1978 final when they captured a third title in-a-row. Kilkenny were appearing in the second consecutive All-Ireland final, having lost to Tipperary in1991 .Match report
At 3:30 pm match referee Dickie Murphy of Wexford threw in the sliothar and the game was on. Kilkenny played against a strong wind in the first-half as Cork settled quickly and were the better side. Cork went five points up without reply and were really motoring. Kilkenny fought back and were awarded a penalty in the 32nd minute. Up stepped
D.J. Carey to take it and he made no mistake in crashing the sliothar into the net. The rest of the half was a tit-for-tat struggle and Cork led by two points at the interval. Soon after the restart Cork’s first-half dominance was floundering as Kilkenny got a grip on the game. The Kilkenny selectors introducedChristy Heffernan onto the team whileMichael Phelan was moved from midfield to full-forward. It was a wise move because, together with John Power, they captured two more goals in the second-half. Cork failed to cope with this onslaught and Kilkenny were the champions on a score line of 3-10 to 1-12.tatistics
