The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship of 1992 was the 106th edition of Ireland’s premier hurling knockout competition. The championship ran from May to September of that year, culminating with the All-Ireland final, held at Croke Park, Dublin on 6 September. The match was contested by Kilkenny and Cork, with Kilkenny taking the title by 3-10 to 1-12. The prize for the winning team was the Liam McCarthy Cup.

Format

The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was run on a provincial basis as usual. All games were played on a knockout basis whereby once a team lost they were eliminated from the championship. The format for the All-Ireland series of games ran as follows:
* The winners of the Munster Championship advanced directly to the first All-Ireland semi-final.
* The winners of the Leinster Championship advanced directly to the second All-Ireland semi-final.
* The winners of the Ulster Championship advanced directly to the first All-Ireland semi-final where they played the Munster champions.
* Galway, a team who faced no competition in the Connacht Championship, automatically advanced to a lone All-Ireland quarter-final where they were drawn to play the winners of the All-Ireland ‘B’ championship.

All-Ireland final

Overview

Sunday 6 September was the date of the 1992 All-Ireland senior hurling final between Kilkenny and Cork. It was the eighteenth championship meeting between these two great hurling rivals. Both sides last met in the 1983 championship decider when Kilkenny were the winners. Cork last defeated ‘the Cats’ in the championship in the 1978 final when they captured a third title in-a-row. Kilkenny were appearing in the second consecutive All-Ireland final, having lost to Tipperary in 1991.

Match report

At 3:30 pm match referee Dickie Murphy of Wexford threw in the sliothar and the game was on. Kilkenny played against a strong wind in the first-half as Cork settled quickly and were the better side. Cork went five points up without reply and were really motoring. Kilkenny fought back and were awarded a penalty in the 32nd minute. Up stepped D.J. Carey to take it and he made no mistake in crashing the sliothar into the net. The rest of the half was a tit-for-tat struggle and Cork led by two points at the interval. Soon after the restart Cork’s first-half dominance was floundering as Kilkenny got a grip on the game. The Kilkenny selectors introduced Christy Heffernan onto the team while Michael Phelan was moved from midfield to full-forward. It was a wise move because, together with John Power, they captured two more goals in the second-half. Cork failed to cope with this onslaught and Kilkenny were the champions on a score line of 3-10 to 1-12.
