Rothesay (2006 pop.: 11,600) is a Canadian town located in Kings County, New Brunswick.

Geography

Rothesay is located 17 kilometres east of Saint John and is named after Rothesay, Scotland.

Located along the lower Kennebecasis River valley, Rothesay borders the city of Saint John to the southwest, and the neighbouring town of Quispamsis to the northeast. It is served by a secondary mainline of the Canadian National Railway, though there is no longer any passenger service on the line.

Regarded as an upper class community, Rothesay, on a per capita basis, is one of the wealthiest communities in Canada owing largely to the fact that it is home to several wealthy families who have resided in the community for a number of years. In 2001, average personal earnings were $55,479 compared to $36,094 for New Brunswick as a whole [ [http://www12.statcan.ca/english/Profil01/CP01/Details/Page.cfm?Lang=E&Geo1=CSD&Code1=1305045&Geo2=PR&Code2=13&Data=Count&SearchText=roth&SearchType=Begins&SearchPR=01&B1=All&Custom= Statistics Canada 2001 Community Profiles] ] and $43,298 for Canada as a whole. Rothesay is home to the Kennebecasis Rowing Club (KRC) which has been training athletes to compete at a national and international level. KRC was also home to the famed Paris Crew.

History

In response to continuing growth, several municipalities in the lower Kennebecasis River valley were amalgamated on January 1, 1998 by the provincial government. Rothesay was selected as a candidate for amalgamation with several neighbouring communities, namely:

*Renforth
*East Riverside-Kingshurst
*Fairvale
*Part of Wells

Following amalgamation, the town adopted a new coat of arms which incorporates symbols of all five amalgamated communities and bears the motto "Quinque iuncta in uno" ("Five united in one").

The town's population meets the requirements for "city" status under the Municipalities Act of the Province of New Brunswick, however the community has made no attempt to change its municipal status.

Notable persons

* Canadian aviation pioneer Wallace Turnbull invented the variable pitch propeller in Rothesay.
*John Peters Humphrey resided in Rothesay while attending boarding school, although his permanent residence was in the municipality of Hampton, less than 20 minutes outside of Rothesay.
