José Hermano Saraiva

José Hermano Saraiva

José Hermano Baptista Saraiva (born in Leiria, October 3, 1919), is a Portuguese historian and jurist.

He was a professor of law and business managementFact|date=September 2008. He was Minister of Education of Portugal between 1968 and 1970 and ambassador to Brazil between 1972 and 1974. He lectured in the Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Política Ultramarina of the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa and in private teaching institutes.

He is famous, not only in Portugal, but also among Portuguese communities around the world, on account of his television programs on the History of Portugal, broadcast by RTP.

Hermano Saraiva is a member of the Sciences Academy of Lisbon, Portuguese Academy of History and São Paulo Historical Institute in Brazil.

He was distinguished with the "Grã-Cruz da Ordem da Instrução Pública", the "Grã-Cruz da Ordem do Barão do Rio Branco" of Brazil, the "Grã-Cruz da Ordem do Mérito do Trabalho" and the "Comendador da Real Ordem de Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Vila Viçosa".

He is a controversial figure, not only because of his actions as Minister of Education of the Estado Novo, as well as his vision and some of his interpretations of History considered by some sectors of the academic community as too fantasist. His critics point that, even though Saraiva dedicates himself to the study of history, he has no degree in that area superior to the Licentiate. His supporters point his qualities as a television communicator and of spreader of the History of Portugal to the least instructed people in the country and to the Portuguese communities outside Portugal.

He is the son of José Leonardo Venâncio Saraiva (b. April 1, 1881), erudite and well known professor, and wife ... Baptista. He is the brother of António José Saraiva (a known investigator in the area of Literature) and uncle of José António Saraiva (journalist and architect). His maternal uncle is the last living Portuguese survivor of the First World War.

He married Maria de Lourdes de Bettencourt de Sá Nogueira (b. May 16, 1918), daughter of Rodrigo de Sá Nogueira (b. December 3, 1892), a College Professor and a great-nephew of Bernardo de Sá Nogueira de Figueiredo, 1st Marquess of Sá da Bandeira, and wife (m. November 20, 1915) Maria Luísa Rodrigues de Bettencourt, and had issue, five sons, all married and had issue.
