In general, the MPI is used in describing the accuracy and effect of various area weapons. Mortars, Artillery and airstrikes shoot or drop a number of bombs in various patterns. These collections of bombs fall in the general area of the target, and a calculation (or estimation) can be done to determine the mean (average) point at which they have exploded.
