- County Route E14 (California)
County Route E14 is a major east-west arterial thoroughfare that connects the California cities and communities of
Sacramento ,Rio Linda ,North Highlands , Foothill Farms, Citrus Heights, Orangevale and Folsom. The route is designated as Elkhorn Boulevard from State Route 99 to Interstate 80 (though Elkhorn Boulevard continues about 1.5 miles west to Power Line Road at the eastern end ofSacramento International Airport though it does not enter the airport), and as Greenback Lane from Interstate 80 to Hazel Avenue in Orangevale and approximately 3 more miles to Riley Street in historic downtown Folsom. The Folsom section appears to be a continuation of Madison Avenue but is called Greenback (which actually continues into an Orangevale residential neighborhood). For most of its length, it is a major arterial thoroughfare with at least two lanes of through traffic in each direction. The route, as designated, is 17.62 miles long; however, if the un-designated street name extensions are included, the route length expands to roughly 22 miles.Brief History
The name "greenback" refers to the use of paper money for financial transactions at a time when gold and silver coin was the preferred
rate of exchange . The property that Greenback Lane lies on was bought with greenback dollars (United States Note ). The owner is said to have wished to be paid with coin, and became angered when he was not. Hence the name "Greenback Lane."Fact|date=November 2007Notable attractions
Major attractions along the route include the major Sunrise Mall at the road's intersection with Sunrise Boulevard, the Sierra Hills Memorial Park (a major cemetery located along Interstate 80), Sunrise Drive-In Movie Theater (built in the early 1970's), and the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery (just past Fair Oaks Boulevard and adjacent to Sunrise Drive-In).
Future plans
Construction is underway to expand the part between Dewey Drive/Van Maren Lane and
Auburn Boulevard in Citrus Heights to 6 lanes. It is the last part of the road between Fair Oaks and Don Julio boulevards that is still 4 lanes. [http://www.citrusheights.net/home/index.asp?page=10&recordid=822&ref=10]ource
