It was founded by Sir John Maynard, a trusteee of
Elize Hele 's charity, in1658 , making it the third oldest girls' school in the UK, the oldest beingRed Maids' School . The school will celebrate its 350th year in 2008, with various celebrations to mark the occasion. The current headmistress is Dr Daphne West.Academic Standards
The Maynard is well known throughout the
Exeter area as one of the best, if not the best independent school around. There is an entrance examination, except for Sixth Form entry, and competition for places is fierce. The school performs consistently well in UK school league tables, 2007 being the first year when it was beaten to the number 1 spot in theWest Country .
