January

* FV "Pendeen" UK lost in a gale.

January 23

* RMS "Republic" UK and SS "Florida" ITA collided. A total of five people killed, "Republic" sank on 24 January.

February

February 12

* SS "Penguin" NZ struck Toms Rock in the Cook Strait and sank with the loss of 85 passengers and crew. Thirty survivors.

July

July 15

* HMS "C11" UK sunk in collision with "Eddystone" UK off Cromer. Three survivors.

July 27

* Last sighting of SS "Waratah" AUS which was due to reach Cape Town on 29 July. No trace ever found, over 750 passengers and crew lost.

August

August 5

** SS "Maori' UK wrecked near Llandudno, Cape Town with 32 crew killed.

eptember

September 5

* Eduard Bohlen ran aground off of Namibia's Skeleton Coast in a heavy fog.

December

December 3

* SS "Ellan Vannin" IOM sank in Liverpool Bay. All 36 passengers and crew killed.

* Schooner "Loango" UK raised a distress signal off St. Ives, Cornwall. Four crew rescued.
