The San Gabriel Wilderness is a wilderness area created in 1968 of more than 36,118 acres (150 km²) within the Angeles National Forest. The area lies on the southern slopes of the San Gabriel Mountains, between the Angeles Crest and the West Fork of the San Gabriel River.cite web | title=Wilderness.net: San Gabriel Wilderness | url=http://www.wilderness.net/index.cfm?fuse=NWPS&sec=wildView&WID=520| accessdate=2007-12-24]

The area was originally set aside as the Devils Canyon-Bear Canyon Primitive Area of 35,000 acres. [Godfrey, Anthony "The Ever-Changing View-A History of the National Forests in California" USDA Forest Service Publishers, 2005 p.445 ISBN 1-59351-428-X ]

Permits are not required to enter the San Gabriel wilderness.

The following trails provide access:

* Bear Creek Trail - An eleven mile trail, with trailheads near Rincon and Coldbrook Ranger Stations, both on Highway 39.
* Mt. Waterman Trail - A ten mile (16 km) trail, from Three Points to Buckhorn, with a one mile side trail to Twin Peaks Saddle.
* Devil's Canyon Trail - A four mile trail down into rugged Devil's Canyon.
