Destruction of the Humane Society by fire
In the morning of Saturday, April 7, 2007 the Humane Society caught on fire. Nearly 200 cats and dogs were trapped inside when the fire started. It is unknown exactly how the fire started, but it's clear that it started near the laundry room. More than 70 firefighters worked to put at the fire and rescue the animals. The firefighters immediately began pulling the dogs out of the kennels left and right. It is estimated that the fire caused nearly one million dollars of damage. The firefighters were able to rescue many of the dogs, but several of the cats were killed in the fire. The animals that survived were being temporarily held at the JHS clinic. JHS held an adopt-a-thon for the surviving animals Tuesday, April 10, 2007.
Michael Vick Dog Chew Toy Controversy
In early August 2007, a website based out of Jacksonville, Florida began selling a controversial dog chew toy set to look like Michael Vick, who is currently being tried on several counts of dog fighting charges. The company claimed to be donating the profits to an unknowing Jacksonville Humane Society. This sparked national and local media attention. Several days later, a notice was added to the website stating that "because of squabbling over charitable donations" proceeds no longer were being donated.
