- James D. Robinson III
James Dixon Robinson III (born 1935) was the
chief executive officer ofAmerican Express Co. from 1977 until his retirement from that company in 1993. He attendedWoodberry Forest School and is a 1957 graduate of Georgia Tech's School of Industrial Management where he was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity. While with American Express, Mr. Robinson played a prominent role in theRJR Nabisco leveraged buyout battle as chronicled in the book "" (1991) byBryan Burrough . Former Senator Fred Thompson played Robinson in the 1993 movie.James D. Robinson III has been a director of
The Coca-Cola Company since 1975. Mr. Robinson is a general partner and co-founder ofRRE Ventures , a private information technology venture investment firm, along with his son, James D. Robinson IV, a venture capitalist, and a classmate of his son from Harvard Business School, Stuart J. Ellman. Mr. Robinson is also president ofJ.D. Robinson , Inc., a strategic consulting firm. He is non-executive chairman of the Board of Directors forBristol-Myers Squibb and has been a member of its Board since 1976. He also serves on the Boards of Directors ofFirst Data Corporation andNovell Inc., and is honorary chairman of theMemorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center . He is a member of theBusiness Council and theCouncil on Foreign Relations , and an honorary trustee of theBrookings Institution . In previous years, he served as co-chairman of theBusiness Roundtable and chairman of theAdvisory Committee on Trade Policy and Negotiations .Robinson and two of his partners at
RRE Ventures , James D. Robinson IV andRichard McGinn , are all members of theAugusta National Golf Club .External links
