George Armstrong was in charge of standard gauge steam locomotives for the Great Western Railway at Stafford Road Works, Wolverhampton from 1864 to 1896.
Wolverhampton works had a certain amount of independence from the better-known Swindon Works and the latter concentrated on broad gauge locomotives up to 1889.
During George Armstrong's period at Wolverhampton, his brother Joseph was in in charge at Swindon from 1864 to 1877, followed by William Dean from 1877 to 1902.
