Urbana Gerila was a punk and new wave band from Belgrade, SR Serbia, at the time a constituent republic in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

History

Initially named Punkreteni, the teenage band existed for less than two years during the early 1980s. Punkreteni consisted of Branko Rosić (bass), Vladimir Arsenijević (guitar), Zoran Kostić Cane (vocals) and Slobodan Nešović Loka (guitar). All of the members were 13 to 15 years old. After a few weeks the band changed the name to Urbana Gerila. Loka soon left the band to form his own called Defekno Efektni which apeared on the "Artistička radna akcija" compilation. The band became a cult attraction and, even though they had no recordings, managed to sell out the Zagreb's Lapidarij.

The band released only two tracks ("Proces" and "Bez naslova") released on "Artistička radna akcija" various artists compilation in late 1981.

Prominence and legacy

In terms of media prominence, the band is most notable for its one-time vocalist Zoran Kostić Cane who later rose to fame as frontman of the cult band Partibrejkers. After leaving Urbana gerila, Cane joined Radnička Kontrola, another band featured on the above mentioned Jugoton-released compilation.

Urbana Gerila's core actually consisted of Branko Rosić (later to become journalist) and Vladimir Arsenijević (later to become awarded and internationally acclaimed writer-novelist as well as co-founder and editor of the magazine "Rende"). Other members that came through the band include Uroš Đurić (later painter and occasional actor), Slobodan Nešović Loka (later founder of Automatik Records company), and Branislav Babić Kebra (later frontman of Obojeni program), Nenad Krasavac Kele (later the founding member of Disciplina Kičme), and Dragoslav Radojković Draža (later member of Laibach).

A few years after Urbana Gerila disbanded, Rosić and Arsenijević formed the electronic music band Berliner Strasse.
