Henry Mellish School and Specialist Sports College is a small, non-denominational secondary school in Bulwell, Nottingham, England, situated in an area of high social deprivation.

History

The school was founded as a boys' grammar school in 1929 - the Henry Mellish Grammar School, and named after Eton-educated [http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/mss/collections/family-estate/collections/mellish/henry-mellish.phtml Henry Mellish] , a British Army colonel and local councillor, who died two years previous to the opening. The school is now sited near the Highbury Vale tram stop and opposite the Highbury Hospital on "Highbury Road" (B682).

chool future

In September 2009, the school will combine with the River Leen School on "Hucknall Lane" in Bulwell, to form the the Bulwell Enterprise Academy on "Hucknall Lane" - also on the B682 on the north end of Hucknall near the Bulwell Forest tram stop. The River Leen School gets results twice as bad as Henry Mellish. The academy will be sponsored by the Edge Educational Foundation.

Academic performance

Henry Mellish School was judged to require special measures in 2005, but has since vastly improved - the school gained its specialist sports college status with information and communication technology (ICT) as a second specialism in March 2005. The school gets very low GCSE results - under the 30% target, yet typical of most Nottingham schools. In 1997, it got the 20th worst results in England.
