John Grimston, 7th Earl of Verulam

John Grimston, 7th Earl of Verulam

John Duncan Grimston, 7th Earl of Verulam (born 1951), known as the Honourable John Grimston until 1973, is a British peer.

He succeeded to the title of Earl of Verulam in 1973 on the death of his father.

He is married to Dione Angela Smith (daughter of Jeremy Smith and Julia Burrell), the Countess of Verulam, who was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire in June 2007 following the retirement of Sir Simon Bowes-Lyon.[1] She was previously High Sheriff of Hertfordshire in 1992.

Lord and Lady Verulam have four grown-up children, consisting of three sons and a daughter. The eldest son and heir apparent is:

  • James, Viscount Grimston (b. 1978), a merchant banker, married 26 July 2008 Floors Castle Lady Rosanagh Viola Alexandra Innes-Ker (b. 1980), elder daughter of the 10th Duke of Roxburghe, and his only daughter and first child by his first wife Lady Jane Meriel Grosvenor, now Lady Jane Dawnay, younger daughter of the 5th Duke of Westminster. Lord Grimston is a merchant banker with Fleming Family & Partners.[2] Lady Rosanagh Grimston is an art appraiser with Sotheby's.

Lord Verulam is a first cousin maternally of Iona, Dowager Duchess of Argyll.

  2. ^ Tim Walker with Richard Eden (2007) as Mandrake. "It's love, actually, for Rosie and her banker" Mandrake in The Daily Telegraph 23 December 2007. The columnists say that "Lady Rosie, who grew up at Floors Castle, in the Scottish borders, works at Sotheby's, while her Old Etonian fiancé, James Grimston, is a merchant banker with Fleming Family & Partners." They have also been together for a year and a half. Also see William Tinning. (2007) "Society heiress set to marry viscount" The Herald (Scotland), 21 December 2007. The announcement says: "The Viscount Grimston and The Lady Rosanagh Innes Ker. The engagement is announced between James Walter, eldest son of The Earl and Countess of Verulam, of Gorhambury, St Albans, Hertfordshire, and Rosanagh Viola Alexandra, eldest daughter of The Duke of Roxburghe, of Floors Castle, Kelso, Roxburghshire, and only daughter of The Lady Jane Dawnay, of Hillington Hall, Hillington, Norfolk." This is slightly misleading, because the Duke has only two daughters, one by each wife.
