Joinville Island is located at coord|63|15|S|55|45|W|. It lies within the Argentine, British and Chilean Antarctic claims. Joinville Island was discovered and roughly charted in 1838 by a French expedition under CaptainJules Dumont d'Urville , who named it for François Ferdinand Philippe Louis Marie,Prince de Joinville (1818-1900), the third son of theDuc d'Orléans Louis-Philippe of France .Graham Land is closer to South America than any other part of that continent.
