- WTOB
WTOB, at 1380 AM, is one of several
Spanish-language radio stations in the Greensboro-High Point-Winston Salem area.WWBG , at 1470 AM, airs the same programming.History
WTOB was a
Top 40 station inWinston-Salem, North Carolina during the 60s and 70s. George Lee was one of "The Good Guys", and his trademark sign-off was"Drive safely. The life you save may be your own. Myself, I'd rather be late than be the late George Lee." [Mark Burger, "Man Behind the Voice, George Lee, Dies at 67; He Was Active in Radio and Acting," "Winston-Salem Journal", September 30, 2006.]
In the 80s the station played
adult standards in addition to airing local and regional sports events, talk programs such as "Marge at Large", and other local content such as abarbershop music program. At the end of the 80s, most of the station's music came from Satellite Radio NetworksFact|date=July 2008. The station later switched toCNN radio news.Truth Broadcasting eventually purchased the station and switched it toChristian talk [Alexandrea Ravenelle, "New Owners Resurrect WCOG Radio," "Greensboro News & Record", June 3, 1999.] , later airing the same programming as WCOG ["'Missionary' Finds His Field on Triad AM Radio," "Greensboro News & Record", July 8, 1999.] .On May 1, 2001, WTOB began broadcasting "La Movidita," which had previously aired on
WSGH , from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. weekdays and all day on weekends ["SAM," "Winston-Salem Journal", May 3, 2001] . On January 1, 2002,WWBG began airing the same programming as WTOB [Jamie Kritzer, "Radio Station WWBG Changing Format," "Greensboro News & Record", December 27, 2001. ] .In 2003, Truth Broadcasting stopped selling time to La Movidita, which moved back to WSGH. Que Pasa moved from WSGH to WTOB and WWBG ["Hispanic Radio Stations Switch Places on Dial," "Greensboro News & Record", March 20, 2003.] . This was true even though the Spring 2002 Arbitron results showed WTOB had its highest ratings since the change to Spanish programming [Jamie Kritzer, "WKRR, WTOB Earn Gains in Ratings War," "Greensboro News & Record", August 10, 2002.] .
The current programming includes feeds from Mexico, and a couple of local shows. Unfortunately, their ratings fell from the top 50 in the TriadFact|date=July 2008.
