Hayward High School (HHS) is located in Hayward, California and is one of four high schools that serve the city. The official mascot for HHS is the "Farmer" which dates back to Hayward's agricultural roots. Its Emblem is the plow which symbolizes hard work, as well as will and potential for growth.

History

Founded in 1892, Hayward High is the one of the oldest high schools in California's San Francisco Bay Area. The first true high school that opened in 1893 was called Union High School #3. It served students from Hayward, Castro Valley, San Lorenzo, Redwood, Palomores, and Stonybrook. Initially, it was a one story building (two, if you consider the basement). As late as the 1960's, students still rode their horses to school and tied them to hitching posts. Soon, however, the amount of students exceeded the limit and the school site was gradually increased from 10 to 30 acres. The architecture for the new buildings included ionic columns, low-pitched roofs, and friezes of goods. HHS moved to its current campus in 1967 to make way for the PlazaCenter Office Tower. The gym is still standing and is now the Centennial Convention Center.

Downtown Rally

Hayward's own version of "Homecoming", Downtown Rally, has been a school, as well as a city wide staple, for more than 50 years. An annual event which takes place in mid-October, it is the highlight of the school year as well as the most highly anticipated event. Each year each class participates by creating a float, dance, and cheer, as well as decorating a section of stands in the gym, typically with balloon arches, signs, streamers, etc. with an emphasis on each classes respective color. Each class is judged by a panel of judges which include local celebrities, local politicians, and past alumni on things such as dance, decoration, sign, cheer, parade, float, and spirit. Students parade down East Ave. down towards 2nd street, into Downtown Hayward, led by the marching band, cheerleaders, football team, and then each class from seniors to freshmen. After the parade, students file into the gym to begin the competition. Concluding with the evening's football game,usually held at Sunset field, the winner of the Rally is announced, and the floats are paraded around the track.

Class Color Controversy

During the 2005-2006 school year, school officials acted upon growing concern for student safety. They feared that class colors, specifically the seniors (blue) and the juniors (red) colors, could be associated with gang affiliation. Officials concluded that allowing students to represent class spirit by wearing their respective class colors would allow for open usage of gang paraphernalia.

Hayward High is a member of the Hayward Area Athletic League (HAAL), the North Coast Section (NCS), and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and offers a full interscholastic athletic program providing a total of 15 sports during the school year. Over 700 students participate during the fall, winter and spring seasons. Hayward High is one of the Bay Area's top schools for sports. Within the past decade, it has sent over 100 students to Division 1 schools to compete in sports.

Football

The Hayward High football team has won more games than any other team in the H.A.A.L, having held more than 23 titles, including 15 in the past 20 years. The 2004 season brought the H.A.A.L title back to Hayward for the first time in over 12 years. The Farmers have seen postseason action in 4 out of the past 5 years by participating in the N.C.S Championship Series. Hayward held a #1 ranking in its perspective division in 2 of those years. In 2003, Hayward fell to the #1 nationally ranked football team, De La Salle in the N.C.S semi-final game, marking an end to one of it's most successful seasons in years. Yet no other year can compare to the 2006-2007 season in which the Farmers posted a 12-2 season. They went undefeated in league for the first time since the 1990-91 season, and made it to the final round of the N.C.S. 3A Championship Series for the first time in over 28 years. During this time, the Farmers were led by running back Troy Evans (first team H.A.A.L.) who averaged over ten yards a carry, totaling 1,825 yards during his senior season, while scoring 35 touchdowns. The team was also led by Austin Stafford, now on scholarship at the University of Nebraska as a linebacker. He was known for his big hits and speed during his career at Hayward. Defeating Alhambra High School in the semi-final game, Hayward was crowned N.C.S 3A East Bay Champions. In the title game against Cardinal Newman High School, the Farmers gave a very valiant effort, yet fell 22-28. Despite the loss, the 2006-2007 football team went into the Hayward history books as the winningest football team in the history of Hayward High School.

Baseball

The Hayward High baseball team has a rich history of success. It was a powerhouse in the H.A.A.L. throughout the early 80's into the late 90's. Coach Jim Bisenius led the baseball team as its head coach for 23 years. He retired in 1992, the same year the Farmers won the N.C.S. Championship. That team was led by Mario Iglesias (Stanford, Chicago White Sox Organization), Chris Dean (Florida State, Seattle Mariners Organization), Victor Banda (Laney), Jason Kell (University of San Francisco), Gary Oversen (Laney), and Mark Luperine (Chabot). Also on the team that year was future Major League Pitcher D.J. Carrasco (Kansas City Royals, Japan, & currently with the Chicago White Sox) The 1975 team holds the U.S. record (along with San Lorenzo High School) for the longest game played by a high school team. The game went 25 innings. Some other notable baseball players include Don Wakamatsu (Coach for the Oakland A's), Jack Del Rio(Head Coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars), Mike Young (MLB Player for Baltimore Orioles), Mike Iglesias (Los Angeles Dodgers Organization), and Brian Mouton ( [Texas Rangers] Organization). The current baseball team is looking forward to future success and is attempting to bring the program back to prominence in the H.A.A.L.

Basketball

The Hayward High basketball program has always had a reputation of bringing a college atmosphere to a high school gym. The Farmers dominated the East Bay Basketball rankings in the 80s & 90's. Hayward was always the team to beat in the H.A.A.L. with talented players such as Nate Perkins (University of Eastern Washington), Gerald Walker (University of San Francisco (several professional basketball leagues), Eddie House (Arizona State, Boston Celtics, Marion Thurmond (San Jose State University), David Bell (University of Montana) and Iman Mattox (Farleigh Dickson University) who is now the Head Coach. Gerald at one time held the all-time California High School scoring record for his career. Former head coach Charley Kendall won over 400 games, including numerous league championships, 7 North Coast Section Championships, and the California Division IV State Championship in 1991. He was the driving force behind the success of the program. In 2004, the team played in the Division II State Championship game at Arco Arena in Sacramento, losing to Dominguez Hills High School of Compton, California.

Badminton

Throughout recent years, the badminton program at Hayward High has proven to be one of the most consistent sports groups in the Hayward District. With a promising record, the Hayward High badminton team boasts a high number of participants which has grown with each passing year. The badminton program has also been recognized as the winner of Hayward High's Highest Scholastic Spring sports group. Currently, Ms. Fernandez is the Badminton team's coach.

In recent years the Hayward High swim team has had modest success. In the 2007 season, one swimmer went to NCS and placed higher than anybody ever had since the 1970s.

Swim Center

HHS has a swim center/pool which opened in 1975 and closed in 1982. The pool was later filled in during October 2007. The swim center's cabana caught on fire during renovation. The cabana will become Hayward High's New Child Care Center in 2008. The current one is located in M Hall.

October 17, 2007 Fire

On October 17, 2007 at approximately 8:30 AM, the swim center's cabana caught on fire during renovation. The school's nearby Gym and R Hall was evacuated due to risk of burning. The fire took approximately an hour to distinguish. The fire was not that big. Nobody ever saw it.I was one of the people evacuated.

Music Program

Under the direction of Bryan K. Holbrook, Hayward's 2006-2007 Educator of the Year Recipient, the high school music program has soared. In 2007 the Marching band placed 2nd in their division at the Petaluma Band Review, placed 2nd in their division at the Vintage Band Review and placed 2nd at the Oakland Holiday Parade. The 2007-2008 drum major, Jenelle McBride won awards in the drum major category placing 2nd at the Petaluma Band Review and 3rd at the Vintage Band Review. In addition to award winning performances, the music program presents an annual cafe concert, four years running, which showcases individual music talent and raises funds for the music program.

AC Transit

AC Transit has severval stops at or near the school.

Lines 92, 94, and 95 stop at the school. A Line 80 stop is located down the hill at B & Sixth Streets.
