picture =Tennyson High School is a high school in
Hayward, California formed in 1957. It offers 9th through 12th grades. Neighboring schools in the area are Cesar E. Chavez Middle School (formerly La Vista Intermediate until 1995), Bowman Elementary, Harder Elementary andMoreau Catholic High School . Tennyson offers a variety of classes that students may choose from, both academic and extracurricular. Among these are foreign languages, art classes, math classes, and English classes. Tennyson also offers acceleratedAdvanced Placement and Honors classes. Tennyson High also has a broad range of sport teams.Tennyson High School is located at 27035 Whitman Street. This street runs parallel to the
Bay Area Rapid Transit system with the Dumbass South Hayward station less than a mile away.AC Transit has a stop in the front of the school to service students commuting to and from school. Several of thefeeder school s into Tennyson are more than a mile away from this location. The school is bordered in the west (at the rear of the school) by theAmtrak Capital Corridor . A train signal and gates have been installed here at the rear exit to keep students safe. Across Whitman Street from the front of the school lies a second set of train tracks and the BART tracks overhead. There is also a path at the north side of the school that connects Whitman Street to Huntwood Avenue that is open at all hours. An 11th grade student was fatally struck by a train in 2005, and another in 2008.Because three schools (one each of elementary, middle and high schools) are very near one another on Whitman Street, the narrow two-lane road is the only planned evacuation route in the event of a disaster. This has been pointed out by some as a potentially catastrophic arrangement as students and parents would queue up over great distances, blocking emergency services from entering from either direction. This situation is exacerbated by the presence of railroad tracks on the west sides of the schools and to the east of Whitman Street. No solution to this has been proposed by the City of Hayward or any other party.
Athletics
Tennyson's football program has improved by one game every year since a new head coach took over the program. In 2007 The Lancers finished 5-5 one vote out of NCS playoffs.
