United Learning Trust

United Learning Trust

The United Learning Trust (ULT) is an educational charity in England, created to manage a number of Academies spread across the country. ULT is a subsidiary of the not-for-profit charity, the United Church Schools Trust (UCST). ULT's ethos is based on the Christian principles of respect, service and compassion, discipline and hard work. The trust aims to prepare young people for a rewarding and enriching adult life.

ULT is involved with 13 academies. The existing academies in Manchester, Lambeth, Northampton, and Salford were joined in September 2006 by ULT’s new Academies in Barnsley, Walthamstow, Paddington, and two in Sheffield (Sheffield Springs Academy and Sheffield Park Academy). Work is progressing on a new Academy in Stockport and three proposed Academies in Banbury, Swindon, and another one in Manchester.

It currently is looking likely also that, from September 2008, ULT will run a new academy in Midhurst, West Sussex. This academy would take over from Midhurst Grammar School. However, this has met opposition: from the press; from groups who feel religion and education should be kept separate; and from students, citing a fear of too much freedom to alter the curriculum in a way that is biased to Christianity.
