Varangaon

Varangaon

Once a small village, Varangaon today is growing fast. It is located 12 km east of Bhusawal, a main junction & divisional headquarters of Central Railway. Although still served by a Gram-Panchayat, population of Varangaon has crossed 50,000. The Varangaon Ordnance Factory located nearby & the passing by Mumbai – Nagpur national highway (NH6) has turned the village into a town. There is a railway station where few trains stop, puts Varangaon on the main Mumbai – Howrah rail route.

A small river Bhogavati flows through the town, although it is mostly dry for half of the year. Bhogavati later joins Tapti River near Bhusaval. The Hatnur Dam on River Tapi which is located 11 km north, provides water to the town.

The town has 4 schools and a famous Mahatma Gandhi College. Founded by late D. B. Joshi & others, the collage teaches all three (Science, Arts & Commerce) streams till graduation.

Farming is the main source of income of the majority of the people. Sugarcane, Banana, Cotton & Jowar are the main crops, taken twice a year in both harvests, thanks to the irrigation water from River Tapi.

Nageshwar temple is situated on the outskirts of the town, which is an ancient Shiva temple. Here the Shiv-lingam resides in the shade of an idol of a big Cobra, hence the name. It is believed that the Maratha Sardar Bajirao Peshva paid his tributes to this temple, before marching on to concur Delhi & the Mughal Sultanate. ‘’’Muktai Temple’’’ of Mehun Muktainagar is also nearby.
