Hurricane Chris first began rapping in elementary school, where he placed in talent shows. After hearing a chant of "Hey Bay Bay!" by local DJ Hollywood Bay Bay, Hurricane Chris modified the chant to "A Bay Bay" to his hit song of the same name.
Atlanta, Georgia -based producerMr. Collipark was fascinated by the song and later helped Chris be signed toJ Records in 2007, when his major-label debut "51/50 Ratchet " was released in October. The sound of the album was inspired by ratchet, a type ofcrunk rap music locally popular in Shreveport.cite web|last=Futterman|first=Erica|title=Breaking Artist: Hurricane Chris|url=http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2007/10/17/breaking-artist-hurricane-chris/|work=Rolling Stone|date=2007-10-17|accessdate=2008-06-27] Soon afterwards,Rap-A-Lot Records released "You Hear Me?
