Styx River, New Zealand

tyx River, Canterbury

The Styx River runs along the northern boundary of Christchurch before flowing into the Waimakariri River close to its mouth. This river is situated in an area experiencing rapid urban development. A 40 year vision for the catchment was developed and adopted by the community and Christchurch City Council in 2000 and is currently being implemented. This River catchment has its own web site http://www.thestyx.org.nz

tyx River, Otago

The Styx River flows into the Taieri River in the valley near Paerau, north of Dunedin. It was given the name Styx because of its use as a natural moat around the Paerau Prison, a historic prison dating from Otago's gold rush era, situated on an outcrop of flat land originally bordered on three sides by the river, and on the fourth by a sheer cliff face.
