Slidell's proposal

Slidell's proposal

Slidell's Proposal- John Slidell was sent by president James Knox Polk in 1846 to negotiate with Mexico on various disputed boundaries and lands. Slidell was accompanied by General Zachary Taylor to negotiate with Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna. Slidell's proposal would have made the Texan-Mexican border the Rio Grande as opposed to the Nueces River, which was considered by Mexico to be the active border. Slidell's Proposal would have also purchased a large portion of Mexico's North American territory, consisting of what is currently the states of California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah, for $15 million. The proposal was rejected by the Mexican government, and the Manifest Destiny-crazed United States was pushed closer to the brink of the Mexican American War.
