- William Baly
William Baly (1814-1861) was an English physician who was born in
King's Lynn , in the county of Norfolk. After studying medicine at theRoyal College of Surgeons and theSociety of Apothecaries , he furthered his studies inParis ,Heidelberg andBerlin . After receiving his doctorate at theUniversity of Berlin in 1836, Baly returned toLondon and opened a private practice. Later he was a lecturer and physician atSt. Bartholomew's Hospital . In 1859 he was appointed "physician extraordinary" toQueen Victoria .Baly specialized in the research of
dysentery andcholera . In 1840s he was a prison physician at Millbank Penitentiary, and published an important treatise on diseases andhygiene concerning prisons. He also published an English translation ofJohannes Peter Muller 's "Elements of Physiology". Baly was killed in a railway accident, southwest of London, on28 January 1861 .Written Works
