Number 1 Radio School is currently based at
RAF Cosford and forms part of theDefence College of Communications and Information Systems . The unit pre-dates the formation of the
Royal Air Force and its roots can be traced back to theRoyal Flying Corps School for Wireless Operators which formed in 1915. It was based atRAF Locking between 1950 and 1989 when it was disbanded to form part of Number 1 School of Technical Training atRAF Cosford . It was reformed on 2 April 2003 and incorporates the [http://www.raf.mod.uk/aerialerectorschool/ Aerial Erector School] atRAF Digby . The School is responsible for the delivery of basic training to all Royal Air Force personnel of the newly formed Trade Group 4 and for the provision of advanced training on a wide range of equipments to members of Trade Group 4. This task includes assimilation training for members of Trade Group 3 and Trade Group 11, which were brought together in 2005 to form Trade Group 4. The new Trade Group 4 is geared to the delivery of network enabled services rather than the maintenance and operation of current legacy systems.
