Doc is a fictional character in the cult television series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". He is played by veteran actor Joel Grey. Doc, while appearing at first glance to be an eccentric old man, is actually a reptilian demon with vast knowledge of the dark arts.

When Dawn is looking for a way to bring her mother back to life, Spike takes her to Doc, who has a reputation of knowing about dark magic, specifically resurrection. While disturbed by Doc's demeanor, and the fact that she manages to get a glimpse of his short tail and black eyes, she follows his advice.

Later Spike brings Xander to Doc for more information, this time about Glory. Doc attempts to stall for time and dispose of the Key's ritual text. Spike sees through this, and Doc drops the "crazy old man" facade and attacks them, throwing the ritual text into the fireplace as well. After a brief skirmish, during which he has an advantage against them due to his speed, Doc is apparently killed after being impaled through the chest with a sword by Xander while he is distracted fighting Spike. However, it is revealed that he survived soon after Spike and Xander grab the ritual text out of the fire and leave.

In "The Gift", Doc appears on the tower where Dawn is held, quickly defeating Spike when the latter attempted to stop him and save Dawn, and cuts her as part of Glory's ritual, before Buffy was able to push him off the tower with ease. His actual fate was not fully revealed on-screen, though it is implied that the fall was fatal.

Powers and abilities

One of Doc's most notable powers is that he has immense knowledge of black magic, his specialty being resurrection spells. He also possesses superhuman speed and agility, able to cross the entire length of his sitting room with a single jump and sneak up behind Spike without the latter noticing. He can also survive and rapidly regenerate from bodily damage that would kill or disable a normal human, such as his impalement by Xander. He also has a long, chameleon-like tongue which possesses remarkable strength, as it easily knocked Xander backwards and pinned him against the wall a few feet above the floor before he retracted it. He can also differentiate between vampires and humans, "smell" the presence of a human soul in other beings, and shift his eye color from regular to solid black.

Doc appears as a supporting character in the following season 5 episodes:
