History

The school was opened as Woodlands Secondary Modern School. It became a comprehensive in 1975.

Academic performance

The school gets above average results at GCSE, being the fourth best in Derby LEA. At A level, it is reasonable and again the fourth best in Derby, but under the England average. The Ecclesbourne School in Duffield also takes prospective A level candidates from Allestree, and although it is similar to a grammar school, Woodlands still manages to achieve better results and generally holds a better reputation in the Derby area.

Alumni

* Bob Laxton - local MP for Derby North.
* Nigel Clough - Footballer
