Community college

Established as the Athlone Technical (later Vocational) School, and under the auspices of the Co Westmeath Vocational Educational Committee, the school was made independent and self-managed as the "Athlone Community College" in 1991. Informerly known as the "Gimphouse", it is located next door to the The Marist College (a boys' school) and near the Our Lady's Bower Covent (a girls' school). Other secondary schools in Athlone are the Aloysious College (a boys' school) and St Joseph's College, Summerhill (a girls' school).

The Community College accepts both boys and girls and has an all-Irish division where the Irish language is used as the medium of instruction.

Development

Development has started on a new school for the community college, hopefully opening in 2009, costing 15,000,000. This will be three stories high, and will make it the largest school in Ireland.
