The Irish midlands are made up of the central plain of
Ireland . The Irish midlands comprises seven counties:Laois ,Leitrim ,Longford ,Offaly ,Roscommon ,Tipperary , andWestmeath . It also includes the far eastern area ofGalway . Ireland's renownedbogland primarily is located in the midlands, and includeds noted bogs such as theBog of Allen .The Irish midlands are home to many of Ireland's lesser known attractions. For example, the early Christian
monastic site atClonmacnoise , on the banks of theRiver Shannon is among the most important in Ireland. The countryside of the Midlands includes vast plains as well as the Glens of County Leitrim. Moreover,Cahir Castle in CountyTipperary , is one of the largest and best preserved castles in Ireland.County
Westmeath is known for its rivers and lakes which include theRiver Shannon which flows through the town ofAthlone . Lockes Distillery is one of the few remaining whiskey pot distilleries which remains in Ireland today. Further, Strokestown Park House and Famine Museum in CountyRoscommon relates to the visitor two different stories, that of the rich and that of theGreat Famine .References
