Competing in three Summer Olympics, he won two medals in the C-2 event with a silver in 2008 and a bronze in 2004.
Štěpánek also won seven medals at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships with five golds (C-2: 2006, C-2 team: 1999, 2003, 2006, 2007) and two silvers (C-2: 2003, C-2 team: 2010).
