Boston College and theNew Orleans Saints . A former football star atDuquesne University , he served as a high school coach inSouth Huntingdon, Pennsylvania andTatehtum, Pennsylvania from 1947-1952. From 1953-1958 he was assistant coach and scout at theUniversity of Pittsburgh . In 1959, he was an assistant underMike Nixon with theWashington Redskins . He was head coach of theBoston College Eagles from 1960-1961, where he had a 7-12-1 record. OnDecember 21 ,1961 he resigned his position as head coach. From 1962-1964 and from 1966-1971, he was again and assistant at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1965, he served under former boss Mike Nixon on thePittsburgh Steelers coaching staff. In 1975 Hefferle, then the Saints' director of pro personnel was hired as interim head after the firing of John North.
