John Saffin

John Saffin

John Saffin (1626-1710) was a Boston merchant, best known for his "A Brief and Candid Answer" to Samuel Sewall's "The Selling of Joseph". [Peter Kolchin, "American Slavery", Penguin History, paperback edition, 64]

Biography

Born in Somerset, England, John Saffin moved to the American Continent as a young boy, and settled in Scituate, Massachusetts.

After a career as a shrewd merchant in Boston, he moved to Bristol, Rhode Island in 1687. The rest of his life was marked by his conflict with Samuel Sewall over the issue of slavery.
