LaMar Lemmons Jr. is an African-American politician from the State of
Michigan . He is currently in his second term in theMichigan State House of Representatives . He is a Democrat who represents the 2nd district in Wayne County. It includes part of NorthernDetroit that borders8 Mile Road .Early life
Lemmons was born in
Memphis, Tennessee , where he lived until he moved toDetroit in 1950. He attended Detroit Public schools until he enlisted in theAir Force . Lemmons served atAshiya Air Force Base in Japan. He attended theDetroit Institute of Technology . He worked for theFord Motor Company until he founded his own business, Lemmons Transportation. Lemmons has four children, including former Rep. LaMar Lemmons III.Political career
LaMar Lemmons and his eldest son were one of the few father and son pairs ever to serve concurrently in the Michigan State House, until his son retired in 2006. He has gained notoriety for pushing legislation that would give Michigan drivers a 20% discount on auto insurance. Lemmons sits on the Energy and Technology, Insurance, Military and Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security, and Senior Health, Security, and Retirement Committees.
