Sinn Féin politician and a member of the 23rd Seanad. He failed to win a Dáil seat at the 2007 general election in the Donegal South West constituency, when he received 8,462 first preferences, up from 2,697 in the 2002 general election. Based on this showing, he is widely tipped to push the incumbent TDs for a seat in the next general election. He was elected to the Seanad in July 2007, aided by a voting pact between Sinn Féin and the Labour Party.Doherty was born in
Gweedore ,County Donegal ,Ireland . Acivil engineer by profession, a member ofSinn Féin since 1994 he has served on the national executive ofÓgra Shinn Féin . Doherty is a committed Irish speaker and a member of MIJAG, the national group that campaigns against the high cost ofmotor insurance . He is involved in many campaigns working to bring forward innovative proposals to develop the North West ofIreland as a whole and one of his main priorities is job creation.Doherty was an unsuccessful candidate in the 2004 European Parliament election for the Ireland North West constituency.
