T.J. Ryan (born 1974) is a former Irish sportsman. He played senior hurling with Limerick from 1994 until 2006.

Early life

T.J. Ryan was born in Garryspillane, County Limerick in 1974. He was educated locally and from an early age he showed a great interest in hurling.

Playing career

Club

Ryan plays his club hurling with Garryspillane. He had some success at underage levels and in 2005 he played a key roleFact|date=November 2007 on the team when the club won their first ever senior county championship.

Inter-county

Ryan played hurling with the Limerick minor and under-21 teams in the early 1990s without much success. He made his senior debut in a Munster Championship game against Cork. Limerick later went on to win the Munster final and Ryan collected his first senior medal. In the subsequent All-Ireland final Limerick played Offaly. With five minutes left in the game Ryan’s side were leading by five points, however, Offaly went on a scoring spree and notched up two goals and five points in the remaining time to snatch the game from Limerick. Two years later in 1996 Limerick won the Munster championship for a second time in three years before later qualifying for an All-Ireland final meeting with Wexford. In spite of Wexford being reduced to fourteen men, Limerick still lost another All-Ireland final. There was some consolation in 1997 when Ryan won a National Hurling League medal. The following few years proved difficult for the Limerick hurlers as success eluded them. The side have come close to creating some upsets in the Munster and All-Ireland championships, however, the team has yet to recapture the success of the mid-1990s.

Following Limerick's exit from the 2006 championship Ryan retired from inter-county hurling.
