Bechamp Reduction

Bechamp Reduction

The Bechamp reduction is used to reduce aromatic nitro compounds to their corresponding amines, using Iron and HCl. [Org React 2, 428 (1944)] This means that it is important in the production of anilines accessing the chemistry of diazonium compounds. Like most nitro reductions, it can only be applied to aromatic species, as the aliphatic nitro group is much more difficult to reduce completely, often remaining as the hydroxylamine.
