Sven Erik Holmes

Sven Erik Holmes (born February 13, 1951 in Grand Junction, CO) is the Executive Vice Chair, Legal and Compliance for KPMG LLP, a national accounting firm, where he directs the office of general counsel, government affairs, security, external communications, office of internal audit, and the firm’s ethics and compliance programs. He is also Counsel to the Board of Directors and a member of the Management Committee. In 2007, Accounting Today named him one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in Accounting.

Holmes was the Chief District Judge in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma, appointed to the seat by President William Jefferson Clinton and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 7, 1994. He was appointed in 2001 by Chief Justice William Rehnquist to the Budget Committee for the Judicial Conference of the United States, serving as Vice Chair 2004-2005. The Budget Committee consults with Judicial Conference committees to formulate and submit for approval by the Conference the Judiciary's annual budget; it then presents the budget to the U.S. Congress.

Previously, Holmes was a partner at the law firm of Williams & Connolly in Washington, D.C. He was Staff Director and General Counsel to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence from 1987-1989, Vice President of the Baltimore Orioles from 1989-1993, Administrative Assistant to the Governor David L. Boren of Oklahoma from 1975-1977 and taught Constitutional Law as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Tulsa College of Law from 1999-2005.

Holmes received his A.B. from Harvard University in 1973, J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1980 and LLM (Taxation) from Georgetown University Law Center in 1987. He served as a law clerk to United States District Judge Thomas R. Brett from 1980-1981.

Holmes grew up in Oklahoma. He lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife Lois Romano (a Washington Post political reporter), and his daughter Virginia. Another daughter, Kristen, attends Northwestern University.
