Anal sampling mechanism

Anal sampling mechanism

The Anal sampling mechanism (also known as the anorectal sampling reflex) is a reflex which detects the contents of the rectal vault and prevents the unexpected voiding of feces. The reflex helps maintain continence.

The physiologcal basis for the mechanism is poorly understoodcite journal |last=Rao |first=Satish |year=2003 |month=December |title=Pathophysiology of adult fecal incontinence |journal=Gastroenterology |volume=126 |issue=1 |accessdate=2007-03-20 ]
