Beast of the East

The Beast of the East is a high school and collegiate wrestling tournament held annually in Newark, Delaware. Originally called the Delaware Winter Nationals, the name "Beast of the East" stuck when the tournament joined the ranks of the toughest high school tournaments in the United States. It draws some of the best teams in the country every year including perennial powerhouses Blair Academy. Another supreme national power house that enters the tournament is the Nazareth Area High School Blue Eagles out of Nazareth, PA, the top ranked public school in the 2007 season. Other teams include St. Edward High School, Massillon Perry High School, St. Paris Graham High School, and bitter rivals Central Dauphin High School and Cumberland Valley High School both commonly placing. Beast of the East winners have gone on to high accomplishments in NCAA Division I wrestling, including a number of national champions. The tournament was originally started to provide scholarship money for Delaware high school wrestlers and continues that tradition today. Vic Leonard was the original tournament director, Bob Shaw has taken over that responsibility in recent years.
