Zaebos

Zaebos

Zaebos is a demon or spirit in the "Dictionnaire Infernal". Zaebos is said to be the Grand Count of the infernal realms, and appears in the shape of a handsome soldier mounted on a crocodile.

Profile

Zaebos is depicted in several ways. He is sometimes shown or described as part crocodile, part human, one of the many animal-human combinations in the Hebrew imitation of the Sumerians. He is sometimes depicted with the body of a crocodile and a human head, crowned with a ducal coronet. He is supposedly of a gentle disposition. In Zorastrian etchings, he is sometimes depicted as a handsome soldier riding a crocodile and also known as Sallos.

S. L. MacGregor Mathers wrote in 1904 of Sallos from a Zorastrian etching, The Nineteenth Spirit is Sallos (or zaebos).

According to an article by John Weir, he induces men to practice pederasty and sodomy.

His Favors can be found in graveyards and require a crocodile tooth as an amulet for protection. He particularly detests the odor of burning cedar and, upon the next Fall of Angels, he will ride his 30 Legions against the Metatron.

Zaebos in popular culture

In the "Dungeons & Dragons" roleplaying game, Zaebos is a pit fiend serving the archdevil Belial.

Jazz trio Medeski Martin & Wood released an album (July 2008) entitled "Zaebos" as part of John Zorn's Masada Book Two series.
