Australian Design Award

The Australian Design Awards promote excellence in design and innovation in Australia. The stated purpose of the Australian Design Awards is to:

* Recognise and reward excellence in Australian design and innovation.
* Improve the awareness and promote the benefits of professional design to industry and the general public.
* Demonstrate the importance of design in the link between invention and the commercial success of products.
* Foster a culture of design and innovation in Australia.
* Raise the profile and significance of professional design in Australia in the development of globally competitive products.

The Australian Design Awards is an industry body established by the Industrial Design Council of Australia (IDCA), founded in 1958. The Awards are Australia's only national design awards for industrial design and one of the few forums in Australia to showcase excellence in design and innovation. Since 1991, the Australian Design Awards has been a division of Standards Australia.

In 2007 the Australian Design Awards expanded its entry criteria to include all professionally-designed products on the Australian market, including products designed in Australia. From 2007, the Australian Design Awards became known as the Australian International Design Awards to reflect the global nature of the Awards.

Since its inception, the Australian Design Awards has highlighted Australia's design icons including the Hills Hoist, the Victa lawnmower, the Holden Monaro, the Cochlear ear implant, Ben Lexcen's winged keel, the Décor wine cooler, the Dolphin lantern torch and Marc Newson's Skybed for QANTAS.

The Australian International Design Awards (as it is now known) is recognised by the Commonwealth Government and the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design [ICSID] as the peak promotional body for the Australian design industry, and for its important role in fostering a culture of design and innovation in Australia.

Awards

There are three types of Accolades issued by the Australian International Design Awards, they are:
* Australian International Design Mark (recognising Good Design)
* Australian International Design Award (recognising Design Excellence)
* Australian International Design Award of the Year (recognising the best product of the year)

History

The award was established in 1958 by the Industrial Design Council of Australia (IDCA). In 1991 the Australian Design Awards became a division of Standards Australia.
