Washakie County is a
countylocated in the U.S. stateof Wyoming. As of 2000, the population is 8,289. Its county seatis WorlandGR|6.
Washakie County was organized in 1911 and named after the head chief of the
Shoshonepeople, Chief Washakie, who became an ally of the US Government.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,243
square miles (5,809 km²), of which, 2,240 square miles (5,802 km²) of it is land and 3 square miles (7 km²) of it (0.12%) is water.
As of the
censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 8,289 people, 3,278 households, and 2,310 families residing in the county. The population densitywas 4 people per square mile (1/km²). There were 3,654 housing units at an average density of 2 per square mile (1/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 90.22% White, 0.11% Black or African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 6.21% from other races, and 2.17% from two or more races. 11.47% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 27.1% were of German, 13.1% English, 9.9% Irish and 6.2% American ancestry according to Census 2000.
There were 3,278 households out of which 32.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.90% were married couples living together, 7.30% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.50% were non-families. 26.50% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.90% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the county the population was spread out with 27.20% under the age of 18, 6.40% from 18 to 24, 25.20% from 25 to 44, 25.30% from 45 to 64, and 15.90% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 99.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.30 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $34,943, and the median income for a family was $42,584. Males had a median income of $31,633 versus $21,028 for females. The
per capita incomefor the county was $17,780. About 10.00% of families and 14.10% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.10% of those under age 18 and 12.20% of those age 65 or over.
