- Tapanui
The picturesque town of Tapanui lies in
West Otago inNew Zealand 'sSouth Island , close to the boundary with Southland region. Aforestry town, it lies between the foot of the Blue Mountains and thePomahaka River . Deer stalking andtrout fishing are popular pastimes of the area. For almost a hundred years, the town was serviced by theTapanui Branch railway line, which despite its name never actually terminated in Tapanui. This line was formally opened in late1880 and closed after being damaged by severe flooding in the region in October1978 .In New Zealand the name Tapanui is closely associated with the mysterious ailment
chronic fatigue syndrome , which - until it became an accepted ailment - rejoiced in the nickname of "Tapanui 'flu". The doctor who first documented the rise of the condition in New Zealand, Dr Peter Snow, was based in the town. cite web|url= http://www.rnzcgp.org.nz/news/nzfp/Dec2002/Snow-December-02.pdf|title= Reminiscences of the chronic fatigue syndrome |author= Peter Snow|publisher= Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners|month=December | year=2002|accessdate=2006-07-24|format=PDF] cite web|url= http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/GE0603/S00010.htm |title=New Zealand loses a fine GP |publisher= www.scoop.co.nz |author=Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners |accessdate=2006-07-24] cite web|url= http://www.rnzcgp.org.nz/documents/ANNUAL_REPORT_2006.pdf |title= RNZCGP Annual Report, with elegy on page 37 |publisher= Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners |page=37 |format=pdf|accessdate=2006-07-24]The name Tapanui means "Edge of the Forest" in Maori.
