Branston (pop. 4019 in 2001 Census) is a large village in
North Kesteven ,Lincolnshire , approximately 5km (3 miles) south-east of Lincoln. It is on the B1188.History
The
Domesday Book of 1086 recorded the village population as 350, a figure which stayed relatively stable until the beginning of the 20th century when the population began to quickly increase to the current total. The character of the village has changed much over the post-war period but the village has retained much of its historic centre - where the majority of buildings are constructed from the attractive local limestone. The village's most notable buildings areBranston Hall and [http://beehive.thisislincolnshire.co.uk/default.asp?WCI=SiteHome&ID=5440 Branston All Saints' Church] .Unusually for a relatively large village, Branston now has only one public house, the 'Waggon & Horses' a modern building which stands on the High Street, close to the historic centre of the village. One hundred metres further up the High Street is the Home Guard Club (a private members club with a licence to sell alcohol). However, two further public houses were once located in the village, 'The Plough' which once stood on the opposite side of the High Street from the present 'Waggon and Horses' (the building was demolished in the 1970s in order to straighten a dangerous bend at the centre of the village), and a short walk away, the much older 'Bertie Arms' (on the corner of Rectory Lane and Hall Lane - now a private house).
Education
Branston's secondary school is called
Branston Community College , and is on the outskirts of the village on the road to Heighington. Also on the same road is the primary school, called Branston Junior School. Branston Infant School is located on the Valley Estate, which lies on the northern side of the village, close to the main road to Lincoln.External links
