River Owenabue

River Owenabue

The River Owenabue (lga|Abhainn Buí|yellow river), also spelled "Owenboy", begins just north of Crossbarry and flows east towards the sea for roughly 20 miles or 32 kilometres. It flows through Crossbarry and on to the small village of Halfway. It then reaches Ballinhassig where it widens into Ballygarvan. It then meanders through Ballea Woods into Carrigaline, where it reaches the sea. The area is known as the Owenabue Valley. A family of otters and many herons are seen on the river. The heron has become a symbol of the area and 10 bridges cross the river.
